Latest from the SC doers and reporters

I can't remember a time when more forces were at work monitoring and actively addressing legislative problems in South Carolina. We are truly blessed to have so many concerned citizens notably right of center at work on issues, often doing so in the halls of power in Columbia.

Legislators Travel to Panama; Guess Who Pays?
Several legislators, all members of a commission that oversees the S.C. State Ports Authority, were took part in a $29,000 trip to Central America last fall. The excursion, which sought to promote South Carolina ports to Panama Canal officials, included five S.C. lawmakers, along with a representative of a Washington lobbying firm and a Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce official. 'Repeal Amendment' a Priority for House GOP Caucus
Among priorities for the House GOP Caucus this session is the passage of the "Repeal Amendment," according to House Speaker Bobby Harrell. During a Jan. 6 press conference, Harrell said under the Repeal Amendment, if two-thirds of all state legislatures voted to repeal an overreaching federal law, the law would be struck down. *** IMPORTANT NOTE: The SC General Assembly changed from a direct email system to a submission form on the individual webpage of each lawmaker. The links below will open each lawmaker's page where you must click "Send a message to Representative" then paste in your message.I saw this coming last year when they put the forms up and took the e-mail addresses down. I guess they felt like they were getting to many e-mails. I talked to an aide and she told me her job was to delete any message that does not come from a constituent.

Following is some additional information from our friends at GrassRoots GunRights of South Carolina (www.scfirearms.org). Please read and ACT! January 25, 2011 Some elected representatives are finally seeing the prohibited carry restrictions placed upon concealed weapon permit (CWP) holders are unreasonable and need to be abolished - but not for you. Unfortunately, the only gun related legislation moving forward in the SC General Assembly is a bill - H. 3405 - to make politicians more equal than the rest of us. H. 3405 would let “any other elected or appointed public official” - that means politicians - who possesses a CWP to carry a self-defense firearm anywhere in the state. But, this bill will NOT allow YOU same freedom! H. 3405 is nothing more than a self serving bill that proves that politicians think their lives are more important than your life or the lives of your family! H. 3405 will allow politicians to carry in schools, restaurants that serve alcoholic beverages, churches, day care facilities, high school and college football games, publicly owned buildings, court houses and court rooms, private residences without permission, and even into posted businesses! But, H. 3405 will do NOTHING for you! H. 3405 is another example of how politicians seem to forget the fact that they are public servants, not our lords and masters. Why should public servants have greater privileges than you? Isn’t your life and your family’s life just as important as the life of a politician? GrassRoots GunRights strongly opposes H. 3405, just as we did similar proposed legislation last session and the session before that. GrassRoots still believes the words “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” Evidently, some SC politicians do not believe SC citizens should be treated as their equals. Unfortunately, some politicians think like the pigs from George Orwell’s book “Animal Farm” where the ruling pigs said “All animals are equal, but some are more equal than others”..........

H3405 was stopped dead in its tracks
Congratulations! You successfully stopped this bill in its tracks. Reports from the hearing say that the only person in favor of the bill was its sponsor. Because of your swift action, the legislators on the committee all agreed it was a bad bill. Legislators should not get special privileges over us. They are our servants! It is good to constantly remind them of that. So thanks to all those who made phone calls, sent messages, and showed up at the subcommittee hearing! We’ve stopped H3405, dead.
I confess I didn't do a thing on the above, but can assure you that despite the smashing outcome, there was never any guarantee of a victory here. Not with the present crowd in Columbia! The idea that it got out of committee once, much less several times, is stunning.

OK, this just in!

The New Jersey Government Record Council ruled in December that the town of Somerset had overcharged Tom Coulter in 2008 by $4.04 on the $5 it collected for a compact disc of a council meeting and must issue a refund. The town estimates that it spent about $17,000 fighting Coulter's appeals (and paying his attorney's fees). [Courier News of Bridgewater, 12-22-2010]

Awfully good to see it happening in Joisey, where I first joined the struggle of man against System, and in a town that's given me many pleasant memories....and even reported in the paper I grew up reading the funnies in, which later published my letters and a short profile of my musical work.
Many were the battles my comrades had against petty bureaucrats like this -- really takes me back -- and doesn't it show how effective and meaningful a "small" fight can be?
He wanted his money. He knew it was due him. He didn't want local bureaucrats to be able to treat even "small" things callously. He fought to the end, even HIRING A LAWYER, and got total restitution.
About that Courier-News daily indoctrination sheet.... On moving to Anderson I was shocked to see its own
daily indoctrination sheet had the exact same editor, the suspiciously-named extreme radical Socialist Fred L. Foster. Merely further proof that there's not a thing Southern about Southern daily indoctrination sheets!
