Belgium proves it: national governments as we know them are superfluous

It finally happened: a civilized country (one of the most so) found itself without a national government, and.... life was better!

Who would have thought it? Poets have dreamed it, 1950s folk groups sang it, dramatists have scripted it, but only one modern western country has, to the knowledge of this self-appointed pundit, ever actually let time run out on the central political cancer. Let's dream a great dream and imagine the day when Babylon-on-the-Potomac goes out of business too -- or better yet, goes back to its original Constitutional job description and patches the document left by the Founding Fathers.

Or, best of all, let's envision the fedgov turning to the Scriptures for its guidance and marching orders!

Belgium No. 1 in days without government

BRUSSELS, Feb. 18 (UPI) -- Belgium has been without a government for 250 days -- breaking a modern-day record that was held by Iraq -- and some Belgians managed to joke about it.

Across the country, Belgians marked the event with mock celebrations toasting their non-government leaders who haven't been able to form a working coalition since elections in June, The Guardian reported Friday.

In other news, it's another presidential midterm and the world is witnessing, thank God, another Ron Paul-related money bomb.... whose stunningly fast progress is a rare ray of hope in the ongoing Titanic-like wreckage of the good ship USA. Oddly, I can't get a positive statement out of the person who first emailed me this news, or Wikipedia, or anybody else that our hero is in fact going to run again, but... apparently that's considered the definite meaning.

Say a prayer that ameriKa lasts to the next presidential election and that they don't "suicide" or "accident" this great man as they have so many others. His wife already had an airplane flight that almost ended in midair.

If the great man can raise 700 G's
in one day before he's a candidate, what can stop him from going all the way to the White House -- maybe even way ahead of schedule? That would certainly be preferable to riots followed by a military takeover, as in Egypt.

From noted Columbia, SC-area activist Talbert Black comes the following item. GrassRoots GunRights is a large, outstanding Second Amendment organization with its own print newspaper. We hope many of you in SC will answer this call, and those elsewhere will push for similar legislation where you live.

From: tallbert@talbertblack.com

We have the
opportunity to expand our right to self defense in South Carolina this year with H.3292. I've been working with GrassRoots GunRights (GRGR) of South Carolina since 1999. They have been defending and expanding your right to keep and bear arms in South Carolina tirelessly and effectively for a long time.

When GRGR calls out the activists they call us Gorillas... because just by sitting in the committee room, watching and recording, we make the legislators as nervous as if there were a bunch of Gorillas in the room watching over their shoulders! So, GrassRoots Gorillas.... unite!

Please see the note below from Bill Rentiers of GRGR and make plans to attend the subcommittee hearing on H3292 on Thursday February 24th, 2011 at 9am in room 516 of the Blatt building.

Thanks for all you do!
Talbert Black Jr.

*** GrassRoots Gorillas CALL TO ACTION! H. 3292 ***

The House Judiciary General Laws subcommittee has scheduled another meeting on Thursday February 24th, 2011 at 9am in room 516 of the Blatt building to discuss H. 3292.

Every GrassRoots Gorilla who can possibly make it needs to be at this meeting! So please TELL ALL YOUR FRIENDS. Pass this email on, and ask everyone to attend. We need this meeting packed full of gun rights supporters to convince the members of the subcommittee to adopt the GrassRoots proposed amendments to H. 3292 and recommend the bill for passage.

As GrassRoots has previously stated, H. 3292 is a very important bill which - if amended properly - could change SC gun laws for the better in a number of ways (open carry, restaurant carry, prohibit employers from banning guns in stored employee's vehicle, etc.) GrassRoots has proposed amendments to fix the problems with H. 3292.

Gorillas should meet on Thursday February 24, 2011 NO LATER THAN 8:45am near the statue of Strom Thurmond on the statehouse grounds. Contact me with any questions.

House Targets Federal Laws -- "Nullification lives again"

Nullification is a funny word. Often it has a negative cast, as when Washington power hogs run around nullifying every law that made this society the good things that it is today. They set off new atom bombs against the bill of rights one after another.... by we, the people, can do some nullifying of our own.

"Jury nullification" has a distinguished history. No, it's not what judges do when they criminally order juries to limit themselves to weighing whether the evidence is sufficient to convict, but rather the phenomenal power that juries have to judge both law and fact in the Anglo-American system of justice system.

Since the States originally united under the Constitution they have had not only the ability but the gravely serious obligation to pass only just, moral laws in Congress ad to repeal any that are found un-Constitutional, but also to nullify bad federal law individually at the state level -- to declare in effect that it's been found wrong or proper and that the state in question isn't bound by it.

A daring proposition compared to the rest of history, it's true, but that's what America is made of! Nowadays of course the fedgov is totally lawless and defiant about it so nullification is gaining ground in many state legislatures. It is simply great to see it happening in the historically feisty sovereign state of South Carolina.... but extremely alarming that its politicians are talking Constitutional amendment (superfluous if they'll read the federal and state Constitutions) and a Constitutional convention! The latter phrase has a noble ring to it, but it is truly one of the most noxious ideas in the political lexicon. Any such gathering would be totally out of control and almost certainly wreck the way of life our forefathers bled and died for.

Please write your state legislators (and others like the troublesome speaker of the SC House) and politely demand that they vote against the above monsters and instead begin seriously funding and enforcing the existing laws, most notably the Bill of Rights.

Most days the PN Executive Director sends out summaries of news from Carolina Journal online. The Journal is from the John Locke Foundation in N.C. which is neoconservative but offers much news of politically incorrect interest. (The PN is of course Carolinas-based but not Carolinacentric!) Anybody care to attend and report? This blogger has never been to one.

Have you gathered yet that I embrace paleo-conservatism, i.e. conservatism in its original form that was healthily contemptuous of political lies, vanity and grandiose notions? We of the "paleo" stripe oppose between 99 and 100 percent of the warmaking that goes on.... because war is a game that -- in our studied opinion and the founding fathers' -- only politicians win, and that always detrimental to the real public good. We were embattled when the so-called War on Terror was started up but now find a majority of Americans are on record as opposing the abovementioned aggressions. (Where did all those magnetic ribbons go??)

Since the PN is all about tax and fiscal realism, surely this news break is germane. Can you think of better uses for that 20 billion a month.... Do you honestly think the Afghanis need or deserve to have that money spent on them more than yourself and your family?

A local freedom issue (Big Brother in Greenville)

Every day and seemingly everywhere, freedom-crushing laws are being debated and passed at all levels of government from small towns to giant countries. It seems the smaller bodies all have a "me too" attitude to federal tyranny -- as the US fedgov grows ever more brazen in its theft of our basic liberties and privacy, so do your town and my county et al.

Below is a letter warning of such outrages right here in Greenville County, S.C., where the PN is headquartered. Greenville is a beautiful, peaceful area except that public officials are totally out of control there. These bureaucrats come from ordinary hard-working families like yours and mine -- how on earth do they become little Stalins immediately on getting elected? Let me guess: they're smashing your rights where you live as well!

Subject: County Council

Hope you are doing well today.

You may or may not have heard about the animal control ordinance/law that Greenville County Council is considering at this time. In its current form it will apply to all animals and will regulate how long you can have your animal tied up, what device/harness you can use, how long the rope has to be, or where they should be tied---this all comes from the proposed change in the law/ordinance . The bottom line of what they are considering is whether to have government intrude further into our lives or not. Which would you prefer?

Also, if this passes they will need more of your money (tax dollars) to cover the expenses of enforcing this law.

You have the opportunity to take a small stand for personal freedom and individual responsibility by contacting your County Council member and asking them to not pass this law. They need to hear from you or else this could be passed.

Feel free to contact me with any questions.

Also in today's morning mail: a former SC official dares to tell a roomful of schoolkids the monstrous truth about entitlements, i.e. government giveaways to individuals and other entities on the basis of their being supposedly held back by society's stinginess, or some evil force. Entitlements are the lifeblood of a welfare state (welfare being the classic textbook case of them).... and they're what is being rightly denounced on the great Russ and Lisa talk show on Greenville's WORD-AM as I write. People are still reeling from Pretendent O'Bummer's delusional State of the Union address and deranged 2/15 press conference on the economy.

Even as entitlements (a.k.a. socialism!) devour the most magnificent national economy in known history, all the politicians talk about is how to keep on spending, spending, spending, and find new, even more banal ways to do it! Surely it's time to move from concern about their competence to discussion of their mental state. They are certainly callous and contemptuous of the public they claim to serve.

Taylor: Law of Unintended Consequences

Former S.C. Secretary of Commerce Joe Taylor explains to a Dutch Fork High class how legislation passed to help citizens can sometimes have a detrimental effect.

Taylor says, for example, that he believes companies are more likely to initially hire workers from temporary staffing firms rather than bring on permanent employees because of government mandates that require firms to continue offering health insurance coverage through COBRA after employees leave.

Come to Columbia tomorrow, Thursday, Feb. 17; Freedom Conference in CA

I helped leaflet greater Columbia for ten hours yesterday to publicize tomorrow's "We Remember" press conference on the north side of the State House. A number of upcountry and Columbia-area regulars have committed to attend. Our message to the world will be that while the various accredited victim groups are tallying up their grievances and their supposed need for expen$ive memorials, reparations, sympathy and concessions, it must be remembered that the South has been through some of the worst oppression, destruction and persecution anybody has -- and the world would do a great injustice by forgetting this.

It's the 146th anniversary of the burning of Columbia by Union troops under General Sherman, you see. The major media have been notified and some very well may cover this event. Please attend -- take a stand for Dixie and for suppressed historical truth! Link for the invitation with full details:

Major event for February: COME RALLY FOR TRUTH in Columbia

Trying to keep up with all the major and very germane material that belongs in this blog is like standing under Niagara Falls with a paper cup. Long overdue, however, is mention of the magnificent 2011 Freedom Conference organized for this weekend by our friend and RBC's respected colleague Peymon Mottahedeh is organizer. SC Economic Summit a smash success

Well, the Feb. 7 Summit came off great despite some jitters. Shortly before showtime, only three SC state legislators were registered to attend this great program strategically focused on reacquainting politicians with the basics of gold and silver economics. But by final accounting, over one-third of the General Assembly either attended the full event or stopped into check it out. So did the state treasurer and other notables.

It was a joy to be there. The scene was an oldish but charming building off Huger St. where the city vanishes and the river is in view -- an appropriate setting for an event in which politicians leave the capitol-city matrix to get back to basics as they were known for millennia before the age of instant communication. But instant communication is what the event was all about: Dr. Edwin Vieira and other notables in the real-money field were heard and (mostly) seen via internet! At least two spoke on one large screen and their charts were viewed on another beside it.

I drove down with Josiah Magnuson, one of the tech guys that made it all happen. We hoped to caravan with Prof. Steven Yates and other upcountry stalwarts but it didn't work schedule-wise. Much mingling and confabulating were accomplished at the hall before the welcoming and introductory speakers were heard. About 7:30 it was time for the long-awaited banquet. This featured a delicious array of vegetables with a superbly done prime rib being carved at the end of the line.

After the main speakers had had there say, the great Disciple Aaron Bolinger, a moving force on all such activity in this state, went to the podium and tied it all together in optimistic and practical terms. The socializing, plottin' and plannin' resumed as the vast assemblage of electronic equipment was broken down. Some of us had been wondering about the big black concert grand piano lurking in the farther shadows -- it turned out to be a superb, vintage Baldwin. Josiah fittingly gave us a round of A Mighty Fortress Is Our God on it, and I played (while everybody sang) Dixie.

As you'll read in Aaron's followup email (with germane links) below, the Summit was timed to coordinate with a key legislative hearing the next day.

Friends:

The South Carolina Economic Summit, and the open (two-house) hearing the following day in the State Senate building, were both absolute successes! From the standpoint of the public and grass root group leadership that attended – we were delighted! The number (18) of state legislators who made it on either or both days exceeded our expectations! (A FULL 10% of the South Carolina legislature is now studying the subject of Sound Money!)

It would have been difficult to imagine this outcome. But we will graciously accept it and use this momentum for more forward progress.

Perhaps the two questions asked most after the event were:

What is the plan now?

Can I get copies of the videos that were produced, and documents used for the Summit?

Answering the second question first, “yes,” we will be producing multi-disk (DVD) sets of the material used for the Economic Summit. We are compiling (over 12 hours of video was shot ...) and it will take perhaps two weeks to edit and produce this DVD collection. The documents (slide shows, etc.) are also being uploaded shortly to our web site (www.nvcca.net ).

The plan for forward progress is a bit more involved. Stage One is continuing education. 10% legislative involvement is outstanding. But it takes 51% to pass any legislation at all. So we still have about 60 more state legislators to FULLY inform on the substance of this plan, and gain their approval for it.

Also part of the education process is the general public, including the business community. With the media tone-deaf to reality, that will be challenging all around. But the SC Sound Money Committee is continuing to work hard -- and with you on our side it can happen!

The first thing we really need is for YOU to help. Pick any one or more of these items and just DO IT!

Make a donation. We have two booklets (“Economic Federalism” and “American Leadership”) that explain in great detail much of the substance of the material we covered in the summit. (A flyer is attached showing what these two books are about.) They were designed FOR ONE PURPOSE: Educating our state legislators. Monographs from Larry Parks, Edwin Vieira, and others, specific to our banking system, and why we need an alternative medium of exchange to protect against the coming collapse of the paper dollar, are in these books. There are 170 state legislators in South Carolina. Every one of them should get a copy of each of the books. Then they can read at their own leisure about all the nuances of having a parallel system of sound money functioning in the State, and the other elements of our Platform for Liberty. Any donation coming from any source, regardless of amount, will be used to acquire them – as long as you specify you want your donation to go to that purpose. (Or simply order blocks of these books on your own and help distribute them at the capitol with us!) Contact Jackie Fowler for info on making a donation to that element.

Contact YOUR state legislator! It is not necessary that you be an “economic expert” to discuss this subject with your Senator or Representative. Very short, simple messages will be sufficient. Just say “members of the Assembly are working on a plan for gold and silver coinage as an “insurance policy” in the event of economic turmoil in our nation. I would appreciate it very much if you would work with Rep. Michael Pitts [if a House member] or Senator David Thomas [if a Senator] in developing and endorsing this plan in the South Carolina Assembly.” Let them know you are in their district, and watching!

IF YOU ARE IN OR NEAR COLUMBIA – our team is working inside the Capitol on a regular basis. If you can make it to the State House, please contact Patricia Wheat. There will be books to deliver, appointments to be kept, and many members to meet with on liberty subjects. More bodies in the state house means more people can hear from us IN PERSON. There is NO SUBSTITUTE for personal contact! They are in on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of each week. You can see them even if they are in the chamber and in session. Our activists can train you on working with House or Senate pages (at the front desk near the assembly chambers) to meet members IN PERSON! The goal: NO LEGISLATOR LEFT BEHIND!

The “Platform for Liberty” contains over 30 items of model legislation. Some of it has ALREADY BEEN INTRODUCED and is waiting for action. As we find bill numbers, we will pass along the info. When any of this legislation shows up, it is crucial for two things to happen: 1) Contact legislators and request them to CO-SPONSOR; 2) attend any hearings scheduled to either testify in support of it, or just to be present so they know the public is supportive. (H-3029 is the bill to DISconnect Social Security Numbers from all state documents. This one is in the Judiciary committee, and NEEDS SPONSORS!) A collection of other bills are in the drafting stages right now, by assorted members. We’ll give an update when bill numbers appear, or committee action is imminent.

"It is not the function of our government to keep the citizen from falling into error; it is the function of the citizen to keep the government from falling into error." (United States Supreme Court - American Communications Association v. Douds)

"The argument that the two parties should represent opposed ideals and politics of the Right and Left, is a foolish idea ... the two parties should be almost identical, so that the American people can throw the rascals out without leading to any profound or extensive shifts in policy. It should be possible, to replace one party with the other party which will pursue, with new vigor, approximately the same basic policy."
--Dr. Carroll Quigley, Tragedy and Hope

Quotes from Gordon Chesterton:

  • "The Christian ideal has not been tried and found wanting; it has been found difficult and left untried."
  • "Religious liberty might be supposed to mean that everybody is free to discuss religion. In practice it means that hardly anybody is allowed to mention it."
  • 'My country, right or wrong' is a thing that no patriot would think of saying, except in a desperate case. It is like saying, 'My mother, drunk or sober'.
  • “The whole modern world has divided itself into Conservatives and Progressives. The business of Progressives is to go on making mistakes. The business of the Conservatives is to prevent the mistakes from being corrected.”

"it is a very difficult thing where a subject-matter of dispute, strictly and purely ecclesiastical in its character,--a matter over which the civil courts exercise no jurisdiction,--a matter which concerns theological controversy, church discipline, ecclesiastical government, or the conformity of the members of the church to the standard of morals required of them,--becomes the subject of its action. It may be said there, also, that no jurisdiction has been conferred on the tribunal to try the particular case before it ... " (Watson v. Jones, 13 Wall. 678 (1872)

In other news.... most strangely, Ron Paul has been kicked off of the advisory board of the Young Americans for Freedom. Suddenly they find he's soft on"national security", obviously meaning he opposes ameriKa's insne warmongering. Since it make no sense at all and Dr. Paul's position is the same pure Constitutionalism it's always been, I suspect backroom politics are at work here -- and I find it passing strange that the axe-man is named Jordan MARKS, the anglicization of MARX as in the creator of communism. Here's a ringing denunciation of this pseudo-conservative outfit by one of the great Libertarian founders. Mr. Rothbard wrote at the time YAF was (as my fellow boomers will remember) grabbing headlines as a supposed "extreme right" organization. Mr. Rothbard's piece is amazing current -- we disagree only with his lack of a distinction between small-L "libertarians" (Tom Jefferson, Ron Paul and you) versus capital-L"Libertarians" (the word as soulless, rootless institution).

Now, here's a highly meaningful if tragic story you won't find in today's daily fishwrap despite the profound meaning of the anniversary on which it expounds. Anybody remember? A decade ago, Slick Willie had sicced federal goons on a huge, thriving church in Indiana for the "crime" of refusing to gouge its staff members' paychecks for the tax thieves. But then all cocnerned citizens heaved a sigh of relief as the great Christian conservative Republican messiah George W. Bush got elected president. Surely he, the great /grassroots hero of our dreams, would put a stop to this ongoing crime?

You know, by standing up for religious freedom and the rest of the Bill of Rights at the end of the eleventh hour? This was, after all, supposed to be "Morning in America", as the adults came back to take over
