Read a column by John Derbyshire today positing that the super-rich running this country will always keep the "China syndrome" financial meltdown from ever actually occurring. It's true they've kept life affordable for  huge numbers of people far longer than most of my kind of pundit ever predicted, and one would feel moved to thank them except it's a huge bubble of unreality which clearly is moving to a catastrophic halt, whether this week or two years from now. Defense firms confirm layoff warnings? Defense firms, the ultimate blue-chip industry of the universe?
