Case in point!

Yesterday I decried the way SC politicians' worldview diverges from their overall voting patterns and from what you would expect from one of the most famously conservative, anti-statist states on earth. This just in (Thanks, Talbert), and note how it's yet again a Senate that plays tricks to keep things expensive and socialistic!

Friends of South Carolina!

Dear nelson,

Does this sound familiar?

“Senate set to pass largest budget in history!”

“Budget set to spend more federal dollars than ever before!”

“Senate rejects common sense cuts passed by House!”

These aren’t headlines about the pit of vipers in D.C.

This is about our own den of snakes, the South Carolina Senate!

Last week, some Senators tried to use a procedural trick to ram the budget through with only a couple of hours of debate.

They are even trying to use us as tools in this tactic!
These spendaholics are telling our people that those who opposed their attempt to force through the largest budget in state history are against bills further down the agenda, like Voter ID and Tort Reform.

We won’t be fooled!

Please, today, contact your South Carolina state Senator! Tell him he must cut spending, not increase it.

You can find who your Senator is and his contact information by clicking on this link.

Today, our state Senate will be debating the budget. Many want to force this budget through without the necessary discussion to expose and eliminate unnecessary spending!

They say it needs to be passed quickly so they can get to other bills.

Please give them a resounding, NO!

Once again, the South Carolina Policy Council has provided some timely research.

Follow this link to the “Fiscal Sanity Alert” or this link to the Senate’s purge of spending restraint.

Here are some of the high lights... or should I say “low lights” of the research:

“The Senate gutted a House proviso eliminating taxpayer-funded lobbying at several agencies and higher ed institutions.”

“The House inserted a proviso to suspend the Education Oversight Committee (EOC), an administrative-heavy body that’s outlived its usefulness. The Senate deleted the proviso and expanded the Committee’s power.”

“$5 million to seven ‘economic development councils’ and four counties. Some of the very legislators who allocated this money sit on the boards of these ‘councils.’”

“A vast expansion of the Jobs Economic Development Authority (JEDA) – allowing the agency to use tax dollars to fund nonprofits engaged in almost any activity that has a ‘public benefit.’”

You see, every part of this year’s budget is larger than last year’s– the General Fund is up by $238 million, Fines and Fees/Other Funds are up by $246 million, and money from Washington, D.C. is up by $168 million.

Can you believe that?

Our state Senate, in a time when businesses and families are cutting spending and tightening our budgets, is still increasing spending and expanding the role of government?

This, from the “deliberative body” of our General Assembly!

Please, call your Senator today! Don’t wait, they may have it passed by tomorrow!

We can’t let them increase spending with wild abandonment!

Don’t let them get away with it!

Thanks for all you do!
