After much turmoil and strife among South Carolina political types, it appears SC is going to soon see an official end to voice voting on legislation. This has been a surprisingly hot issue with some of our best legislators coming out against requiring that all their individual votes be on the record. The problem seems to be the fact that you sometimes have to vote for a bad bill to get a good measure in place, and if anybody can access your voting record people easily mistake your strategy. Some known good SC legislators have opposed the idea!
My gut instinct and yours, of course, is to have total transparency in the legislative process. Let's hope we get it and that many more conservatives get involved in lobbying in order to make this big little fight worth it.
Senate Passes Roll Call Voting Bill
The S.C. Senate passed a stand-alone roll call voting bill on Thursday, almost identical to legislation passed by the House and all but ensuring that a law requiring legislators to vote on the record is imminent. The bill would require roll call votes on each section of the annual state budget and any bill or joint resolution having the force and effect of law. The House still must concur with an insignificant language change the Senate made to the bill, but all indications suggest that the House will do so in short order. ........Grotesquely ironic 50-year-old tax news from the world of the rich, famous and decadent: William Holden committed adultery with Jackie Kennedy behind then-President Kennedy's back, because “Holden wanted to get back at Robert Kennedy after the future U.S. attorney general publicly criticized the actor for moving to Switzerland to avoid paying American taxes. RFK lumped Holden in with `the rich who pervert our tax laws.'” Unfortunately, this 9/13 National Examiner note is likelier to be true than many – it's a quote from a book that gets a much lower rate of scoffing amazon.com reviews than most I've checked in this vein. I hope to God that what the paper says about Charlton Heston isn't true!
