Steve periodically piles news links and summaries about a mile high regarding some particularly irksome trend or mover/shaker and sends them out via email. At this, on the right subjects, he (the best-known pro-life organizer in Columbia) is a pro.
An installment of this work that I received today from a Greenville compatriot finally takes on one of the most deceptive and treacherous of all SC GOP judas goats -- the state's former Speaker of the House, David H. Wilkins.
Wilkins was once a friend to the truth and used his influence to help us keep the Confederate flag on the dome for year after tumultuous year. Then one year when the conflict was truly over and a blessed silence prevailed on the flag "issue", Wilkins and company re-animated its corpse. A former friend who works both sides of the political street clued me that the media/government complex was going to move on the flag and finally remove it from its three long-held places of honor on and in the S.C. state house.
Suddenly, obviously via co-ordination, the NAACP was crying anew that they were offended, the media were serving as their free PA system, and the politicians were furrowing their brows over the need to bring peace and harmony by throwing over the majority of citizens who love the flag and wanted no "change". As the issue was coming back to life I asked Wilkins at a caucus meeting why he'd changed his tune. "I have to listen to my constituents," he said, "that's all I can do." I was too dumfounded to point out that as speaker his constituents were the people of South Carolina, not the banking and business power mafia that really runs everything today and fights tooth and nail to destroy Dixie.
We picketed the Speaker once in response, and the next noise heard on the subject in the media was, shockingly, this Country-Clublican icon stating that the establishment had to steal the flags quickly because people had demonstrated against him in front of law office. Once he helped push the great betrayal through, we took it as an invitation to picket lots more, and did -- every Friday morning for a rather raucous hour for a year.
We wanted to believe Wilkins was a good man under pressure to do something unpleasant, but in the succeeding years he has turned out to be one of the biggest phonies under the GOP banner. At a state GOP convention in Greenville in probably 2004 he was quite central in herding the public toward support for the warmonger/neocon/judas goat GOP candidates public office and away from the actual human beings running.
I have no doubt that when the thoroughly despicable George W. Bush named Wilkins ambassador to Canada it was either to reward him for his treason or console him for business lost as a result. Hope he enjoyed the weather up there while reveling in being another whole floor up in Rape-ublican infamy!
Lefemine's documentation comes as no surprise, except that it's been eleven or twelve years of misery with Wilkins and I don't recall anybody else ever taking the time to indict him. Lefemine's whole treatment is repeated at bottom of this page. (Would rather give highlights and a URL -- anybody got one?)
