Washington spendthrifts bust a cog in National Debt Clock!

This is an age of ironies piled on ironies. Look how much a 1960s dime is now worth – and, even without reference to such, the blighted value of a 2011 dollar bill even as it’s printed! I used to see the Dept Clock above the streets of New York City just behind the NY Public Library, and what a contrast if was to the mindless, glamorous yet tragic hustle and bustle of that august neighborhood. So much loot all around – so impossibly much wealth without even taking Fifth Avenue (two blocks away) into consideration. The world’s financial, business and cultural capitol…. But how many that were buying and selling or merely sipping $300-per-bottle wine in penthouses there had any meaningful awareness of the nature of money, or the meaning of those rapidly racing numbers in lights?

You used to see bums in the streets of NYC, or maybe passed out on the steps of the largest cathedral in the world, St. John the Divine. Then they were living in cardboard boxes in subway stations. I fear to find out what it’s come down to by now.
